'You can't have your cake and eat it too'
It's a good phrase, don't get me wrong, it's a fine way to tell people you can't always have it all. Sometimes you gotta pick one or the other.
Butt!! Here's the problem; while it's nice to make others aware, there is a choice to be made, nobody seems to bother, weighing any of the pros and cons of having versus eating.
So... Any capable wordsmiths who might come across this seemingly pointless post, help me out here will ya? Lets take this phrase most literaly, and imagine you have an actual cake, and the choice of having it, versus eating it. And lets see if we can cook up a good old fashion pros & cons list, to make a bit more sense of a certified classic of a cliché expression.

Judging from this quick 2-minute Pros and cons list I made at 4 am, I can conclude that keeping cake is the right thing to do.

Thank you very much for the unexpected actual thoughtfull reply!
Your 4 am list came in at a manic and uneventfull random long umbrella walk in the middle of nowhere at 12:30 pm over here.
Will copy & paste your great start when I find some place that looks inviting to place my butt at for a bit.
And your last keep-con was very interresting, dude! It didn't look like an actual con to me.... Or a pro either. But in that elusive mystery space inbetween.
